Choosing Vitamin D Supplements

5

Vitamin D is great for the skin, especially if you do not tend to receive a lot of sunlight where you live or due to your lifestyle. When it comes to choosing the right supplement there are several factors that would need to be considered.

The Right Dosage

It is hard to get vitamin D during the winter season for sure. Vitamin D shortfalls has unwanted shortfalls and the use of supplements does show some advantages. For instance it helps keeping weight gain at bay. However, taking too much vitamin D can be harmful. The safest way to start supplementing is test your level of vitamin D to determine the required dose. Generally, more than 1000 IU daily is not recommended.

Third-Party Certifications

Reports have found that certain supplements had 180 percent more vitamin D content than what was stated in their labels. This can be dangerous as it increases the risk of an overload. Vitamin D supplements might be checked for an USP verification denoting that the manufacturers have gone through voluntary quality testing by an independent group.

Opt for liquids or gel caps

Some coated pills have the risk of not breaking down in the stomach which would prevent the vitamin D they contain from being absorbed by the body. Capsules, liquids, powders or soft gels do not pose this issue.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is generally more recommended by healthcare professionals since it is the type that is naturally produced by the skin. Vegans might opt for D2 since it is not made from animal products.
