This is a question that comes up more frequently than you’d think. Often, women will be in the midst of their orthodontic procedure when they discover they are pregnant. Their first thought will be to the health of their baby.
Are braces safe for pregnant women?
To answer the question right away, it is okay for pregnant women to wear braces, see an orthodontist and start or complete a teeth straightening program. There are no risks to the woman or baby during pregnancy. This includes all types of braces such as Invisalign, metal braces, lingual and ceramic braces.
Of course, it’s important to let your orthodontist know on your next visit that you’re pregnant. It’s good to have information like this on your medical chart with any doctors you may be seeing. The reasons for this are self-explanatory. You never know when a doctor might prescribe a treatment or drug for some condition that could be harmful to a pregnant woman, so be sure all your doctors, dentists and/or specialists know. Often pregnant women are excited to share the news anyway.
If you’ve always longed to have straight teeth and a perfect smile, a visit to a local orthodontist can be the first step. As we age, crooked teeth and gaps can become worse, so the sooner the better.
