Benefits Of Exercise Include An Improvement Of Heart Health And Being Less Depressed, A Study Reveals

1

It is common knowledge that exercise improves health but the same is true for people who have suffered from a heart failure as well.

Research shows that heart patients will not only benefit from exercise by improving their physical fitness, reducing depression but also the number of cases of deaths and hospitalization.

The study’s lead author, James Blumenthal, a professor  behavioral sciences and psychiatry at Duke, put the study’s findings in perspective, in saying, “We do not know comes first – heart disease or depression – but we do know the two are often related, and if depression gets worse, people have worse outcomes. Exercise has been shown to be safe for people with heart disease, and it also improves depression. These data show the combined benefits of exercise for this population include improved mental health and improved cardio-vascular health.”

The study, which consisted of 2300 patients from the United States, Canada and France, also revealed that those who exercised regularly, and used a treadmill or stationary bike, were more likely to have healthier hearts than those who didn’t.

Better still, since depression after a heart attack usually reduces the longevity of a patient’s life, the practice of exercising regularly also results in a reduction of depression thus increasing the number of years a patient would live after the first instance of a heart attack.

However, there is one thing that must be kept in mind – every heart patient must consult their doctor before starting an exercise routine, considering the seriousness of the condition itself.
