Will power is an ability that helps people resist temptation. The power to resist temptation is a skill that can be developed and improved through practice. This skill is all about resisting gratification now by strategizing. Remember that by delaying your gratification, you will be rewarded with a long term reward.

But how do you keep the future in mind, when faced with the present. The trick is to focus, by creating hype and excitement towards your future goals. Here are a few tips to create focus;

Create distance – If your goal is to get into to a sexy bikini in summer and your colleagues at work are offering you cake. Stay far away from the distraction (in this case the cake). You could also browse the internet for bikinis you would like to wear. This will keep you distracted and focused.

Your option B – You will always be faced with temptation. To make you stronger, have a plan B. For example if you cannot make it to the gym because of work commitments, your plan B would be to walk home from work or do a home based work out.

Visualize – Visualizing an outcome before you have succumbed to temptation, is very powerful. For example if you are a smoker, but have quite and crave a cigarette, imagine the day when your doctor gives you the bad news that your lungs are failing.

If you were the 3rd person- You’ve had an awesome workout and now you want to eat pizza. Think of yourself as a third person and ask yourself what that person would say.
