High Coffee Intake May Protect You From Prostate Cancer, a Study Reveals

2

A study published in the journal, Cancer Causes & Control, reveals that consuming four or more cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of prostate cancer recurrence and disease progression as well.

In explaining the difference between earlier studies and this one, lead author Milan Geybels explains how, in saying, “We used detailed information on follow-up prostate-specific antigen levels, use of secondary treatment for prostate cancer and data from scans and biopsies to assess occurrence of metastases and cause-specific mortality during follow up. Using these detailed data, we could determine whether a patient had evidence of prostate cancer recurrence or progression.”

Speaking of data, researchers used the data of 1001 prostate cancer survivors between the ages of 35 and 74 years of age. All of these survivors were diagnosed with the disease between 2002 and 2005 who were asked to respond to a food questionnaire providing information about their diet and beverage consumption.

Apart from using this date, the researchers also carried out a follow-up analysis five years after the patients were first diagnosed with prostate cancer. Among the 1001 patients, 630 of them provided responses about their coffee intake which were included in the final results.

After the data was collected, it was found that 61% of the patients drank at least one cup of coffee a day while 12% drank four or more cups a day. It was found that those who drank four or more cups a day had 59% less risk of prostate cancer recurrence or progression compared to those who only had one cup.

With that said, as for the 125 men who died, 38 of them died specifically from prostate cancer itself but there was no association found with daily coffee consumption.
