Despite earlier claims that the consumption of fish oil supplements are linked to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke or even premature death, the conclusions made by reviewing 20 studies with almost 70000 participants reveals that there aren’t any benefits.

In summing up their findings, Evangelos Rizos and her colleagues at the University hospital of Ionnina in Greece, wrote, “In conclusion, omega-3 PUFAs are not statistically significantly associated with major cardiovascular outcomes across various patient populations. Our findings do not justify the use of omega-3 as a structured intervention in everyday clinical practice or guidelines supporting dietary omega-3 PUFA administration.”

With 20 studies matching their criteria from a database of 3635 studies, a pooled analysis was conducted using data of almost 68,680 randomized patients and which also included events such as 3993 cardiac deaths, 1150 sudden deaths, 7044 deaths, 1837 heart attacks and 1490 strokes, leaving them to conclude that omega-3 PUFAs aren’t significantly associated with major cardiovascular outcomes as is considered widely.

The genesis of this study began with the purpose to clarify the claims that elicit an improvement in heart health with the use of fish oil supplements. Regulatory authorities also have different views about the benefits of fish oil where the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of omega-3 PUFAs while not all European regulators have done the same.

Yet the scientists have also said that they intend to carry out more randomized studies to see if these supplements might benefit certain individual risk groups, and which might depend on the supplement dosage and the length for which they take these supplements for.
