greatdrugspharmacy2Mosquitoes are an annoyance and thy carry a range of incurable viruses like West Nile, malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and chikungunya. There are however a number of myths about mosquitos that are incorrect. Here are the facts about the myths;

All mosquitoes bite humans – From the 3500 species of mosquitoes, not all of them bite humans. Some of them feed on nectar, birds, reptiles and other mammals. Female mosquitoes only drink blood as it aids egg production.

Mosquitoes are attracted to certain foods, colors and blood types – You may have heard that eating certain foods like bananas, garlic or beer, can attract or repel mosquitoes. This is not true, nothing that you consume can stop mosquitoes from biting you. This is also true of wearing certain shades of clothing. Your blood type will also not affect a mosquito biting you. However, research states that mosquitoes prefer men over women and adults over children. They are attracted to bigger people than smaller ones. This is due to the heat a bigger person may expel.

If you’re pregnant you’re more at risk – This is true and not true at the same time. The main reason why you may attract more mosquitoes when you are pregnant, is due to the increase in body heat when pregnant.

Citronella plants and candles will protect you – Citronella is a weak repellent against mosquitoes. If you use a candle with the oil, once the wind changes direction you are left unprotected.

The United States is free of mosquito-borne diseases – This is not true and there are many cases of mosquito borne viruses in the US. These viruses are on the increase due to increases in travel and tourism into the US.
