What You Need to Know About The Basics of Hydration

10

According to a report by the Institute of Medicine, almost 75 percent of American suffer from chronic dehydration.

Without a doubt, it’s necessary to stay hydrated since it is vital to your overall health and athletic ability. For this, it bodes well to understand the basics of hydration. Also, it is just as important to approach hydration differently when sedentary and when exercising as well. This is because our body responds to heat rather differently when in these situations.

Now, while old recommendations included drinking 8-ounce cups of water a day, they are a thing of the past. In these times, the Institute of Medicine has new recommendations: 3.7 liters (15 cups) for the average male and 2.7 liters (11 cups) for the average female.

Yet these numbers aren’t a given since every individual’s water needs varies based on their age, activity level, temperature, gender and geographic location.

Still, it’s a good idea to review these IOM guidelines for fluid intake and make the necessary adjustments from them on.

Of course, with no magic number that works for everyone, the only way one can do this is by monitoring their own thirst levels throughout the day.

What you have to do is continuously drink water throughout the day so as to replenish the water loss through urine, stool, breathing and skin evaporation.

Also, what is important to remember is that drinking water isn’t the only way to get hydrated. Fruits and vegetables as well as beverages such as tea and coffee can also help you get hydrated too.

Finally, there’s one more factor, in the form of food, that determines whether you should drink water continuously too.
