Home Based Test on the Way That Could Test for Alzheimer’s

3

As we age, most people know our mental functions will begin to slow. The majority of us simply see it as an unfortunate symptom of getting older. However, one ailment people can often run into is Alzheimer’s, a disease with no known cure that leaves people without their memory and often suffering from dementia. But a new test is on the way that could make it easier to see the problem coming.

This new test, known as the Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination (SAGE) would only take participants about 15 minutes to take. Best of all, it could be done in the comfort of their own home.

The test would cover major areas that can become a problem when someone suffers from Alzheimer’s. These areas include: orientation, language, reasoning, visuosptatial and executive areas.

While the test would aim to tell if a person was at risk, it would also make allowances for a gray area, where test takers would be recommended to go see a physician for further testing.

Although the test can’t necessarily prevent the disease, it can give people a chance at fighting it. The researchers behind it were quick to note that test doesn’t actually diagnose it either. It’s simply a way of giving people time to get the help they need so they can live as healthy as possible for as long as they can.

More than 5 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease in America alone. And while a cure is still not available, this test could lead to some very real breakthroughs.
