American Adults Get 11% of Calories from Fast Food, Clearly Results in Obesity

6

The daily American diet comprises more fast foods, thanks to a hectic lifestyle. The latest figures, as indicated by the 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, reveal that the average American now gets 11% of their calories from fast food.

Quite significantly, while there was little difference between the figures between men (11.8%) and women (10.9%) as a whole, the amount of calories obtained from fast food fell drastically with age, with people at the age of 60 and above, obtaining the lowest number of calories (only 6%) from fast food.

Also, while these figures did not vary across people of differing income groups, there were differences found based on race. The non-Hispanic black adult obtained almost 21.1% of calories from fast food while these figures were much lesser for non-Hispanic white and Hispanic adults.

What was also found that the number of calories consumed by individuals who were obese was much more than those who were considered to be of normal weight. The highest figures were obtained for those obese adults between the age of 20 and 39 totaling to about 18.0% every day.

This doesn’t come as a surprise since studies have shown that fast food has been known to contribute to obesity, and which through this study indicates why almost a third of American adults are obese.

A good reason why there exists a correlation between the two was clearly established by an Xtreme Eating 2013 list published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), and which also revealed that major restaurant chains in the United States offer meals that far exceed the daily recommended amounts.
